You have made a decent job of this Clematis photo and I do not think it is too dark.
The centre portion of the image looks all the more striking because it is surrounded by the dark petals therfore drawing the eye into the focal point at the centre.

Thanks for your comment on my leopard picture. I had great difficulty when taking this shot as the leopard was in a very large caged enclosure and the bars made it most difficult to photograph. I had to use PhotoShop to mask-out the vignetting from the bars. Also, there was a large tree in the background. The available lighting was not good as well and consequently I'm very pleased with the end result. Cheers from Down Under.
